2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid Spy Shots & Specs Revealed

2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid Spy Shots & Specs Revealed

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid is set to continue the legacy of one of the most popular SUVs in North America and globally. Made in Japan, the CX-5 is now due for its next-generation update with an exciting hybrid powertrain.

Now, we have our first look at the 2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid. We’ll go through the spy shots, break down the images, and analyze what to expect. If you’re excited, hit the like button and subscribe! Mazda is actively testing the new model, and we might see an official reveal as soon as this summer, with potential availability by the end of the year—fingers crossed! However, delays have been common, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Spy Shots and Design Changes

The spy shots reveal that Mazda is keeping its iconic grille. By comparing the next-generation model with the current one (which received a refresh in 2022), we can identify some key design elements. The refreshed model introduced changes to the lights, and we see some similarities in the upcoming version.

One major change is in the headlights. The boomerang shape remains, but the lights are now positioned closer to the grille rather than on the edge of the fixture. This design is similar to Hyundai’s approach, where daytime running lights integrate into the grille. The lower beam and high beam positioning suggest a possible dual-beam setup or a continuation of the bi-LED headlights seen in the current model.

From the front, the new 2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid remains unmistakably a Mazda. The bottom lip area and general design philosophy remain unchanged. However, there is now a larger plastic section separating the upper and lower grille.

Side Profile and Exterior Features

The A-pillar looks similar to the current generation, and the roof rails remain present. The mirror design appears unchanged, which is not necessarily a bad thing since Mazda’s current mirrors are functional and well-designed.

Examining the window bezel, we notice minor differences. The slight kink in the bezel is positioned higher in the new model compared to the current generation. However, overall dimensions appear largely unchanged. Since the CX-5 is a global model, drastic changes are unlikely.

The vehicle’s overhangs also seem identical, ensuring that Mazda sticks to a winning formula. The wheels could feature a new design, but nothing too drastic stands out in the spy shots. The wheel arches may or may not be painted, as seen in the glossy finish of the turbo model.

Rear-End Design and Features

At the back, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid retains dual exhaust tips, consistent with Mazda’s sporty design approach. The independent rear suspension appears unchanged, dispelling any concerns about a switch to a torsion beam setup.

The taillight design resembles that of the CX-90, with a swooping shape and integrated turn signals. However, Mazda has not introduced a light bar at the rear. The presence of an amber turn signal is a noteworthy addition, enhancing visibility and safety.

Hybrid Powertrain: What to Expect

The most anticipated aspect of the 2026 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid is its hybrid powertrain. Unlike Toyota, Subaru, Honda, or Nissan’s e-Power systems, Mazda’s approach to hybridization is still unclear.

Currently, Mazda offers plug-in hybrids (CX-90) and mild hybrids (CX-90 and CX-70), but a dedicated hybrid to compete with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Honda CR-V Hybrid is necessary. A well-executed hybrid system should deliver around 200 horsepower and 40 mpg while maintaining Mazda’s signature driving dynamics.

Mazda could follow Toyota’s performance hybrid approach, featuring an e-axle for AWD and a six-speed automatic transmission paired with an electric motor and gas engine. However, this would require an entirely new transmission, adding complexity.
